Recently, I was very fortunate to attend an evening with Stewart Copeland, on one of his tour dates. Once playing in some of the biggest stadiums in the world, he sat on the stage, in a small theatre, and recounted, with great energy and enthusiasm, stories of his earlier career, right through to his work in Hollywood and other adventures.
Sitting in the audience, I realised Copeland wasn’t just talking about music, he was talking about creativity, structure, emotion and how to make people feel something. And that’s exactly what great branding does.
There is a definite parallel between music and branding; both rely on structure and spontaneity. A brand system, like rhythm, allows creative freedom. Great music tells stories without words, just as great brands communicate beyond logos. Both require deep understanding of audience emotion and timing.
A melody without emotion falls flat, just like a brand that lacks purpose. Copeland’s career reminded me that the real power lies in how you make people feel, not just what you make them see.
Copeland’s mission is to explore how music works and its “extraordinary power to tell stories”. In his BBC series Stewart Copeland’s Adventures In Music, he interviews artists and explores how music is used to convey emotion and meaning.
At Frost our mission is not too dissimilar; to explore how brands work, how they connect and how they tell stories that stick. Whether through design, strategy or tone of voice, we aim to orchestrate harmony between purpose and perception.
Copeland’s approach vs Branding insight
Blend technical mastery with instinct > Strategy and design need both data and emotion
Evolve – from punk drummer to film composer > Brands must adapt to new platforms and audiences
Collaboration is the heart of creation > Great brands are built through shared vision
Music tells stories through rhythm and tone > Brands tell stories through visual identity and voice
Steward Copeland reminded me that creativity isn’t confined to one medium. Whether composing a film score or designing a brand, the goal is the same – to move people. To tell a story that lingers long after the final note.
At Frost, we help brands find their rhythm. If you’re ready to create a story that sings, let’s talk.
As Copeland once said “Music is the soundtrack to our lives – and great brands are the soundtrack to our stories.”
