Creating a brand concept with a sense of place

In the competitive craft spirits sector, standing out means letting your unique identity shine through, giving consumers an identity they can really get behind.

When River Test Distillery was looking for new ways to achieve its vision of becoming a leader in the space, we took the time to understand the firm’s unique positioning – and developed a brand that captured what made its products so spectacular.

A modern twist on heritage and history
The challenge for River Test Distillery was striking a balance. They needed a way to reflect the distillery’s rural setting on the banks of River Test, traditional hand-crafted products – without the stuffiness.

We focused our attention on the company’s values – things like dedication and heritage – to create a bespoke coat of arms that would take cues from the Nelson family crest, King Arthur’s round table, and the brand’s idyllic Longparish location. This would form the heart of the brand, while wider design choices would bring a much-needed contemporary feel.

We also designed a bespoke 50CL bottle inspired by the rippled formed by leaping fish that can be seen from the distillers barn. We combined our new coat of arms in regal gold with a rich duck egg blue on the label and cork, referencing the distillery barn’s listed shutter doors. And with elegant texturing and a subtle grain, the bottle feels as good as it looks.
